Happy holidays Kendall-Jackson friends! It's Jo-Anna from A Pretty Life Blog here to share a delicious holiday recipe with you! I've made an Apple Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce, and it is divine — SO, so delicious. But what I really love about this recipe is that you can make it for brunch or serve it as a dessert. It would be great for Christmas morning brunch!

Bread puddings are so rich and creamy making them a delicious as a stand alone dish, but adding tart apples to the mix takes this Apple Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce recipe to the next level.

Bread puddings are so rich and creamy, making them delicious as a stand alone dish, but adding tart apples to the mix takes this recipe to the next level. I used Granny Smith apples in this bread pudding because they hold their shape best so you can have an apple in almost every bite. Before I added the apples to the bread pudding mix, I sauteed them for a few minutes in butter and cinnamon. I just wanted to soften the apples and bring out their full flavour — and it worked. What you end up with is a creamy, sweet pudding, with bites of apples, raisins and loads of cinnamon flavour.

But one of the BEST parts of this dish, is the caramel sauce that you drizzle all over the top. A rich, creamy, delicious caramel sauce that is the perfect match for apple bread pudding. It's a must — you must add a ton of it!

See, just look at that caramel sauce sweetly covering all those scrumptious bites of bread pudding — YUM!

As I mentioned before, this Apple Bread Pudding is versatile enough that, if you choose, you can have it for dessert or you can serve it for breakfast. It would be especially delicious for Christmas morning brunch because it can easily serve a crowd! Serve it with the caramel sauce instead of syrup and, as a special holiday treat, enjoy it with a glass of Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay — perfection!

Apple Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce

Recipe type: Dessert
Ingredients

Bread Pudding:

  • 5 cups cubes Challah bread
  • Apple Mixture:
  • 2 granny smith apples, peeled cored and cut into small cubes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Milk Mixture:

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups half and half cream
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/3 cup raisins

Caramel Sauce:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup half and half cream
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.
  2. Lay out the cubed Challah bread on a cookie sheet.
  3. Bake the bread cubes at 300 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes, or until the bread is dried and crusty, but not brown.
  4. When the bread is done baking, remove it from the oven and set aside.
  5. In a skillet, melt 2 tbsp of butter, then add the chopped apples.
  6. Saute for about 3 - 4 minutes, until the apples are soft but not browned.
  7. Stir in the cinnamon and cook for about 1 minute.  Set aside.
  8. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, cream, vanilla and melted butter.  Then add the raisins.

Now it's time to put it all together!

Bread Pudding:

  1. In a 9 x 13 baking dish, add the bread cubes, then the sauteed apples, making sure to scrape out all the delicious sugary cinnamon mix.
  2. Then pour the milk mixture over the bread and apples, and gently stir to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly distributed, and the bread is covered in the milk mixture.
  3. Let the dish sit for about 10 minutes so that the bread has a chance to absorb the milk/egg mixture.
  4. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
  5. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 1 hour, or until the pudding is puffed and firm in the centre.

Caramel Sauce:

  1. While the bread pudding is baking, you can make the caramel sauce that you will drizzle all over this delicious dish.
  2. In a sauce pan melt the butter, then add the brown sugar and cream.
  3. Stir over low heat until the sauce thickens.
  4. Set aside to cool slightly.
  5. Serve and Enjoy!
  6. Serve the apple bread pudding warm or cold, and drizzle it with the warm caramel sauce!
